Whole House Surge Protection

As more and more electronic devices are being added to the average home on a regular basis, it is becoming increasingly necessary for homes to be protected by a whole house surge protector.  Stray electric currants can enter the home's electrical system during a lightning storm and damage expensive electronic equipment and can often lead to fire.  The most common surge of electric power is a lightning strike. A surge can start with a bolt of lightning striking a building or an area near it. The current then travels into the building through pipes or lines of many types. When it gets to a place where it can head for ground, like a computer, TV or phone, it grounds and blows up the unit. In many instances, the unit will catch fire or will transfer the power to something near it, like the equipment user.  A more likely source of an electric surge in the home is a stray electric charge. These stray charges may be due to a general power surge, a tree branch falling on a power or phone line, or the turning on or off of appliances like a refrigerator.

DID YOU KNOW...?

  • Central Florida is nicknamed "Lightning Alley" because we see more lightning here than anywhere else in the United States.
  • According to NASA, in Lightning Alley (the area from Tampa to Orlando), there are as many as 50 strikes per square mile per year.
  • That to best protect your home, make sure it is adequately grounded. In essence, the power surge should never make it to the building.
  • On average, there are 1.5 million lightning strikes per year in the state, causing more fatalities than hurricanes, tornadoes and other meteorological hazards.
  • According to an NFPA report, during 2002-2004 alone, U.S. fire departments responded annually to about 31,000 fires caused by lightning with $213,000,000 in direct property damages.
